Upfest 2011

Upfest FlyerTHE FESTIVAL TO BE AT THIS SUMMER
- FREE ENTRY - - FREE ENTRY - - FREE ENTRY -

Europe’s largest free urban paint festival; Upfest, is now in its fourth year and is preparing to take over its cultural home Bristol by welcoming over 250 artists and 40 DJs, Groups & Human Beatboxers to the event this summer between 4th and 5th June 2011.

‘The Urban Paint Festival’ is now firmly established as the main event for street art in Europe. The two day explosion of events attracts urban artists from all over the world who flock to The Tobacco Factory - the festival’s birthplace, as well as a number of locations across the city.

Big names in national street art culture Don, Inkie and Spqr set up their temporary home alongside home grown talents Cheo, Jody and Lokey.

Upfest partner Stephen Hayles explains why this has become such an integral part of the UK graffiti scene:

“Bristol is established as the home of graffiti in the UK; the whole country and now even the world has attributed this to the City. We are proud to be a part of this movement and will continue to provide a platform for brand new artists to break onto the UK urban art scene. The fact that it’s free just makes it even more exciting.”

The festival helps raise funds and more importantly awareness for the Bristol based charity NACOA who work to address the problems children have growing up in families where one or both parents suffer from alcoholism. Upfest is a completely volunteer led festival and has so far raised £15,000 for the charity. Download the flyer here

Ian Phenna - Geisha Print (Red Cross Japan)

Ian Phenna - GeishaOn March 11, 2011, one of the most powerful earthquakes in recorded history, and the most powerful ever in Japanese history, hit the northern part of the island of Honshu, in the Japanese Archipelago. It occurred off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, with a magnitude of 9.0 MMS, causing enormous damage and rocking the island of Honshu up to 400 kilometers away. Immediately following the earthquake a massive tsunami bored into the coastline, with waves up to 10 meters (33 feet) high, inundating huge areas of city and farmland, destroying everything in its path and killing thousands of people.

Buy a print and win the original on canvas (76cm by 102cm). One lucky buyer will be sent the canvas instead of the print!

‘Geisha’ Giclee Print on Art Paper . 40cm x 50cm . Edition of 25 . £35.00 Every penny from the sale of this print will go the Red Cross (Japan). Our thanks go to Niche Editions for the prints.

Artists needed to bring gorilla sculptures to life

Bristol ZooBristol Zoo is calling on artists from across the region to help design and decorate life-size gorilla sculptures as part of a mass public art event next year.

The five foot tall, 3D gorillas have been created by Bristol Zoo in partnership with Wild In Art and will be placed on the streets of Bristol for 10 weeks next summer, to celebrate Bristol Zoo Gardens’ 175th birthday.

Now the Zoo is appealing for talented local artists and designers to get involved in the project by submitting their designs for how the gorillas could be decorated.

Design proposals can be in any art form - from traditional to new media, from sound and video installations to poetry and photography. To find out more about how to get involved in the project, called Wow! Gorillas, visit the website at www.bristolzoo.org.uk/wow-gorillas.

Artists whose designs are commissioned will receive an honorarium of £800 on completion of their artwork, as well as the fantastic exposure for their work. The deadline for design submissions is Friday, January 28, 2011.
