Sara Mai

Sara has been creating vibrant colourful art with plastic bottle tops for over a decade. The technique is called Plastic Pixel Art, the tops are usually pierced 4 times and woven together with monofilament warp and weft.

Water is Sara’s muse and prompted her to use plastic bottle tops, for their ‘pixel’ colour quality, to create art that addresses water issues such as; the preciousness of water; our collective ‘flushed away’ mentality; the Rights Of The River movement; and the wasteful consumerism of buying ‘value-added water’ in plastic bottles when we all have ready access to a supply of potable water. Most of the art pieces are light and easy to ‘pop up’ anywhere they are needed.

Flowing forward, inspired by the work of El Anatsui and his bottle top installations that cloak building facades, she’s experimenting on repeat patterns replicating wild water movements, building up into larger pieces.

‘Comes Around, Goes Around’ an art-piece that addresses the load water bears around the planet and passing through us, will be woven together at Upfest26.
