Afonsoul
Afonso – aka Afonsoul, is a Brazilian visual artist currently based in Lisbon. His work is rooted in a personal relationship with drawing that began early in life, often emerging during moments of uncertainty as a way to process and navigate difficult phases.
It was during the pandemic that his practice took shape. What started as an instinctive return to drawing gradually evolved into a consistent body of work, expanding into painting and large-scale murals.
His visual language blends human figures with nature and graphic forms, creating symbolic compositions that reflect identity, movement, and transformation. Birds, often swallows and Brazilian species, appear frequently in his work, representing freedom, movement and change, hope, lightness, and a sense of home.
At the core of his work lies a pursuit of hope. Not as an abstract idea, but as a response to real emotional states, a way to process, endure, and believe that change is possible. His murals often aim to create moments of pause within the city, offering a sense of relief, connection, or recognition.
In 2024, Afonsoul was recognized by Street Art Cities as one of the Top 100 muralists worldwide and awarded second place for Best Mural of the Month (May 2024).
Through his work, Afonsoul explores how art can transform both space and emotion, even if just for a single passerby.
