Andy Downes
Andy Downes is a UK-based contemporary portrait artist known for his bold, emotionally charged work that sits somewhere between raw realism and expressive rebellion. Entirely self-taught, Andy has built his practice from the ground up, balancing a career in the trades with an uncompromising commitment to painting.
Working primarily in oils and acrylics, his large-scale portraits are defined by striking colour palettes, energetic mark-making, and a distinctive visual language that often includes paint drips and subtle disruptions to the face. His ongoing series Beautiful Rebels explores strength, defiance, and identity capturing subjects that feel unapologetically present and impossible to ignore. Andy’s work has been exhibited across Essex and London, with pieces held in private collections throughout the UK and Europe. Beyond the canvas, he is deeply embedded in his local art community, running workshops, teaching life drawing, and creating opportunities for emerging artists.
Driven by a working-class ethos and a belief that art should be accessible yet powerful, Andy continues to push his practice forward aiming to build a recognisable, impactful presence in the contemporary art world.
